Consciousness Quotient-CQ™

To do well in today’s fast-paced, highly social, ultracompetitive, and globally connected world, one needs twenty-first-century skills. The Assessment and Teaching of 21stCentury Skills (ATC21S™) is an organization that includes more than 250 researchers from sixty different institutions worldwide. Through their research and assessment, the ATC21S determined four essential twenty-first-century skills. These skills plus contribution make up the new 21st century intelligence of Consciousness Quotient- CQ™. Here they are:

  • Communication ‐ You can have all the raw intelligence in the world but if you can’t express your thoughts effectively, it won’t matter. Strong communication skills allow confidence in expressing thoughts, ideas and opinions through a variety of mediums.
  • Collaboration ‐ Whether it’s within the family, classroom, workplace, or the global community, collaboration is being able to work in a team, learn from, influence and inspire others from diverse backgrounds and mindsets.
  • Contribution ‐ Contributors recognize that we must do more than just consume, we must also contribute our ideas, energy, time, talent, and resources to something beyond ourselves - the greater good.
  • Critical thinking ‐ Critical thinking is disciplined thinking that leads to adaptability, resilience, and problem solving informed by evidence. Critical thinkers can make calm, rational, ethical and positive decisions in a variety of situations.
  • Creativity ‐ Creativity is the ability to transcend traditional ideas, rules, patterns and relationships. It is the ability to generate fresh and original ideas and “out of the box” methods. Creativity has been identified as the most important competency for future leaders.

  • Consciousness represents the full and optimal activity of the mind and senses. IQ (intelligence quotient) represents typically “left brain” intellectual ability, and EQ (emotional quotient) typically represents “right brain” emotional intelligence. For success in the twenty-first century, one will need the integrated “whole brain” skills of CQ.

We now know that every type of function, including logic, reason, emotion, language, imagery, and intuition is served not by one hemisphere alone, but by integration. Critical thinking requires seeing the big picture and the separate pieces. Communication requires logistics and the emotion of language. Collaboration requires the ability to be separate and connected. And creativity requires all hemispheric functions—explicit and implicit—to work together. When the hemispheric processes are integrated in this way, we excel in CQ and can constantly adapt. Integrated Consciousness-Quotient- CQ™ is what we truly need in this rapidly changing twenty-first century.
